Macaw/parrot Breeders
Bird Breeders are constantly poping up and selling out. Scammers are in every classified internet site I have visited. The internet is full of people looking to make money without really "working." Breeding and socializing macaws, or any exotic animal, requires a lot of work. Beware of buying birds from anyone who doesn't have a website. Most reliable breeders have now taken the time to create a place where you can "get to know them" by looking at pictures, reading articles, and sharing information about who they are and the species of birds they breed. The internet has now become the best way to sell macaws and other parrots we breed. Consumers have shown in a recent poll, by Bird Talk magazine, that 65 percent of new parrot owners aquired their bird or birds straight from breeders instead of from a pet shop or bird store. I myself, a breeder of macaws, sell the vast majority of the babies from my aviaries by shipping to customers all over the United States. This new way of doing business has allowed breeders to sell directly to the public, and by so doing, has changed the market drastically. Many of the larger "wholesale" bird farms have either adjusted with the change or are selling out completely. For many older breeders it is no longer profitable to just breed birds. For others it has become too much work to both retail and wholesale the babies they produce. During this transition and change many new breeders have cropped up, older and larger breeders have gone under, brokering has become more common, and it seems everyone is trying to find a way to make selling birds profitable again. In the midst of all this there has been a rise in "bird scams" ... people pretending to sell birds that they don't even have. Good breeders are now useing websites and E-mail to help offset the huge amount of time it takes to make individual sales verses large quantity wholesales. To avoid being scammed; look for breeders who have taken the time to represent themselves through quality internet sites.
Quick food for thought about macaws
Pet Macaws are not your everyday domestic animal. Most all macaws and parrots still have very strong wild instincts which makes keeping them as pets a challenge. This challenge needs to be met with enthusiasm and patience. Learning to understand "wild" behavior will help pet owners to make adjustments with a macaw or parrot in their home.
